On August 1st, I change the sign on my front door.
It is a small ritual, but it marks something real. The liminal heat of July is behind me. The promise of autumn is ahead. Lughnasadh has arrived, and with it the first harvest of the year, the moment when everything that has been quietly growing all summer begins to show itself.
Lughnasadh is one of the great turning points of the wheel of the year. Named for the Celtic god Lugh, it marks the beginning of the harvest season, the first gathering of what the earth has produced. It is a celebration of abundance, of labor rewarded, of the gifts that come from tending something with patience and care through the long warm months.
I love this day. Lughnasadh points toward everything that’s still coming and is my favorite part of the year.
The Threshold Between Two Seasons
July, as I’ve written before, is a liminal month. It exists in the space between the solstice and the harvest, full of heat and stillness and the quality of something building beneath the surface. August 1st is where that changes.
The heat is still here. Summer hasn’t gone anywhere, but something has shifted. The calendar begins to turn even before the weather does. Back-to-school energy arrives and the angle of the light changes almost imperceptibly. For those of us who pay attention to the seasons, something in the body simply knows: the harvest has begun.
That threshold is worth marking as a genuine invitation to pause and take stock. What grew this summer? What did you plant in spring that is now ready to be gathered? What surprised you, what exceeded your expectations, what showed up in ways you didn’t plan for?
These are good questions for a business owner as much as a farmer. It’s in every client relationship that deepened, every piece of content that landed, and every seed of an idea that grew into something real.
What Summer Grew
Summer is a season of abundance, even when it doesn’t always feel that way from inside.
This summer grew the confidence that comes from showing up consistently even when the results weren’t immediately visible. It grew the clarity that arrives from doing, not planning. It grew connections, communities, the bonds that form when people show up for each other over and over without making a production of it.
And for many of us it grew something more personal. A win we didn’t expect, a project that finally moved forward, or a decision that felt scary in June and feels right in August. Personal victories are part of the harvest too, and they deserve to be gathered and acknowledged just as much as the professional ones.
Lughnasadh asks you to name what you’ve grown. Not to perform gratitude but to see it. Because you can’t carry forward what you haven’t first acknowledged.
What Autumn Is Asking For
The harvest is preparation. What you gather now is what sustains you through the seasons ahead.
Autumn asks for your attention while summer is still warm. The businesses that thrive in Q4 are the ones who started preparing in August. The creative projects that fruit in October were tended in July and August when no one was watching. The content that lands in September was written before the season turned.
This is exciting rather than pressuring. Because the foundation is already there. Summer did its work. Now it is time to gather it, shape it, and carry it forward with intention into the most abundant season of the year.
What new projects are waiting in the wings? What possibilities opened this summer that deserve more attention now? What personal wins are giving you the momentum and motivation to push toward something bigger? These are the questions the first harvest asks.
Change the Sign on Your Door
You don’t have to change a door sign to mark the threshold. But I’d encourage you to mark it somehow. Take a moment on August 1st or whenever you read this to stop and name what you’ve grown. Say it out loud, write it down, tell someone who will celebrate it with you.
The harvest is here. Summer grew something good, and Autumn is waiting with open arms and a lot of promise.
Gather it in. Carry it forward. The season ahead is going to be abundant.
If your content is ready for a harvest of its own, I’d love to help you gather it. Let’s talk about what your brand story grew this summer and what autumn is asking it to become.
